“My photographs are recreations of memories that I do not have. These are recordings of actual events, as pieced together in my mind. Although all of the events actually took place, there is no truth to be found in these photographs. In fact, as I attempt to take on the perspectives of a child, a mother, a grandmother, the idea of my own truth is harder to grasp. These images end up exploring the way perspective alters everything. They walk the narrow line between torture and play, tenderness and terror, innocence and manipulation. Our experiences unconsciously flavor our responses, the same way our personal lens changes the way we remember events. These images present a pause in a narrative that asks the viewer, based on personal experience, to interpret what is happening and decide how the story will continue.”—Elizabeth Pedinotti

To encourage the collection of work by emerging artists, Aperture offers special limited-edition prints by the winner and runners-up of the Aperture Portfolio Prize. The purpose of the Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and specific artists whom we can help by bringing their work to a wider audience. In choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, Aperture looks for work that is fresh and that hasn’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues. Proceeds from the sales of these prints will benefit both the artists and Aperture Foundation.
