This limited-edition photograph by 2013 Aperture Portfolio Prize winner Bryan Schutmaat is from his series, Grays the Mountain Sends. The series describes mining sites and small mountain towns, as well as the people who built them, work in them, and sometimes seek to escape them. Ram Under Plexiglas, Milltown, Montana (2012) symbolizes the complex relationships between nature and culture, man and beast, and wild and tame that are fostered in such western American landscapes. In this image, as with the series as a whole, Schutmaat’s carefully controlled palette and rigorous composition speak to the tensions the photographs represent.
