Harriet, Flipper, Tanya & Chloe (For Aperture), 1995/2026
Aperture is pleased to release a new limited-edition photograph by the acclaimed artist Catherine Opie upon the publication of Catherine Opie on Identity and Collectivity (2026), the latest title in The Photography Workshop Series.
This work is part of Catherine Opie’s pivotal Domestic series (1995–98), which offers a foundational look at alternative family structures, kinship, and queer domestic life. To create the Domestic series, Opie embarked on a monthslong RV trip across the United States, set on documenting lesbian and queer households to actively expand the historic narrative of American domestic photography. Depicting Harriet, Flipper, Tanya, and Chloe on a weathered wooden porch outside a sunroom, the photograph presents the four figures at ease in their environment. The casual, relaxed poses—seated on railings or leaning against window frames—evoke a sense of lived-in intimacy and unforced togetherness.
Catherine Opie is best known for her sensitive portraits exploring identity, community, and life on the margins of American society. In this latest installment of The Photography Workshop Series, Opie shares her insights on how photography can navigate personal identity, foster community, and capture collective histories. Through candid discussions, critical analyses, and visual case studies drawn from her celebrated career, Opie invites five of her former students—Lucas Blalock, Janna Ireland, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Jeff Whetstone, and Carmen Winant—to discuss a wide range of topics, from finding a distinct artistic voice to the ethics of the camera and the practicality of making a photobook. Their discussion offers readers insight into their individual and collective creative processes while highlighting Opie’s enduring influence as a mentor and trailblazer in contemporary photography.
This edition is limited to thirty signed and numbered photographs. Proceeds from the sale of this work directly support the artist and the conversations shaping photography.
