In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, photographer Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao continued to document the city of New York just as he had done for the past decade. With painstaking care and the use of multiple exposures, Liao crafted the photograph Flatiron, Halloween after Hurricane Sandy, New York (2012). The photograph is haunting documentation of the days when all the buildings in lower Manhattan had gone completely dark. In the multi-layered, panoramic image, Liao depicts the resilience of New Yorkers in a darkened cityscape. Two days after the storm, despite devastating conditions, we see the city that never sleeps still thriving and burning bright.

About the Artist

Jeff Chien-Hsing LiaoĀ (b. 1977, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese photographer who immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 22 in 1999. He received a BFA from Pratt Institute of Art and Design in 2003 and an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in 2005. Liao first received recognition with his seriesĀ Habitat 7, which was featured in the September 11, 2005, issue of theĀ New York Times MagazineĀ as the winner of Capture the Times photography contest. He has lectured on his photographic practice at several institutions, including the International Center of Photography, NY; J. Paul Getty Museum, LA, George Eastman House; Kentucky Art Museum; School of Visual Art, NY; the Museum of the City of New York; and Aperture Foundation. Liaoā€™s work has been exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of the City of New York; Queens Museum of Art; and Bronx Museum of the Arts.
