Aperture is pleased to offer this very special limited-edition photograph by acclaimed photographer Todd Hido from his series House Hunting. Photographed in the foggy Bay Area of California, he started working on this series in 1996 while cruising through the San Francisco suburbs at night. By way of long exposure and intense color, the images results are both beautiful and disturbing.

”This is one of the earlier images from the series. I drive, I drive a lot. People ask me how I find my pictures. I tell them I drive around. I drive and drive and I mostly don't find anything that is interesting to me. But then, something calls out. Something that looks sort of off or maybe an empty space. Sometimes it’s a sad scene. I like that kind of stuff. So I take the photos and some are good. And so I keep driving and looking and taking pictures.”—Todd Hido

About the Artist

Todd Hido (b. 1968, Kent, Ohio), a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist, has work in many prominent collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was a guest speaker at Aperture as part of the Parsons lecture series. He has exhibited widely in galleries and museums across the country and he has published several books, such as the award-winning monograph House Hunting (Nazraeli Press, 2001), and more recently, Between the Two (Nazraeli Press, 2007). In 2014, Aperture published Todd Hido on Landscapes, Interiors, and the Nude as part of The Photography Workshop Series. Hido is an adjunct professor at the California College of Art, San Francisco, California.
